Oktoberfest draws nigh

Categories: friends

My friend Jim from Drexel is arriving this afternoon. I have to depart shortly to meet him and his sister at the train station, and thereafter the day is pretty open. Maybe we’ll stroll over to the Englischer Garten, scope out some beer gardens, push Jim in the Eisbach. Play it by ear. Nico is itching to play some Fußball and/or frisbee, so I’ve tentatively agreed with him to make that happen later today. I’ll see how Jim and his sister feel about it.

Coordinating social events without cell phones is really interesting. Everything has larger time windows, of course, and also expiration dates, e.g. “OK Nico, try to be there by 2:45pm. If we’re not there by 3pm, something went wrong and we can’t come, so we’ll see you back at the dorms later on.”

It’s quite liberating.

Tonight there might not be partying, because apparently the rule for Oktoberfest is that you show up by 8am on the field to start getting hammered. Don’t want to miss out on that! And this year Oktoberfest should be way better than last year.

I’ll try not to delay posting pictures for too long, but I don’t expect to be chasing hotspots too often this weekend. Expect lots early next week.

i miss you. the quote of the week has been, “you gettin hammered tonight?” and we don’t even have ‘oktoberfest.’ ;)

and another: somebody said “in the biz” in this context this morning:

we had a lecture on the anatomy of the spinal nerves and their branches, to keep it simple, and teh professor was referring to the first thoracic spinal nerve, calling it “T1.” the guy next to me turns and says, “that’s what we call it in the biz: T1.” …oh, how i laughed. i hop[e that story was conveyed accuaratly enough. cause it def made me think of you.

    cheers!

@Will: We bought two cases of Spaten and one of Augustiner. Both Oktoberfest special brew (50% more alcoholic). Would have bought more Augustiner but it’s sold out a lot of places.

  4. Conor says:

@Emily: Can you call anatomy class Oktoberfest for the next two weeks? That would be rad and it would be like we’re hanging out almost.

  5. Emily says:

    deal!

  6. Will says:

That’s what I like to hear dude. I was doing research for my Thor vs Jormungand tattoo and found the best thing ever.

  7. Anne says:

Can you sober up long enough to tell us if you saw the opening procession of brewers and publicans? Did you see any horse-drawn beer wagons? Did you take photos of same?

  8. Emily says:

dude, i didn’t even realize that was a link until this morning. i love germans even more now.

  9. Will says:

Go ahead and get me a mug too.

  10. Conor says:

@Will: There are already some good stories about trying to procure mugs. Even legally. I’ll post later, I promise.

  11. Will says:

    Amazing.
