Oh man, how I wish I’d found out about this earlier. While walking to the grocery store tonight I passed a sign propped up against a tree that promised me an evening of tantalizing delights.
I didn’t go, as on the return trip I was laden with spoils of fruit and grain, and had to bear ever onward to stash the bounty at home. But I did look them up on the information superhighway, and it appears that the Munich chapter of GUUG meets every second Monday of the month. Looks like I have plans for April already.
The German Unix User Group is a non-profit organization for professional computer users using any kind of Unix system.
Unix, in this case, includes the free Unix variants like Linux and the BSDs as well as commercial Unix systems. The important factors for us are openness of the systems, adherence to standards, and the chance to take a look behind the scenes.
Funny that this has me way more excited than a date with a pretty girl, but there you have it.

Hi Conor,
the GUUG Conference “Frühjahrsfachgespräch” (http://guug.de/ffg) started at Tuesday the 11.th of March and continues to the 14th of March (just where you took that picture) … so if you are interested, stop by
And of course you are welcome to visit our monthly meetings!
Best wishes,
Hella
Why is it in English?
Well, for one, English is cool. Everything you see around town, especially in marketing something, will have at least one word in English, because it seems hip and cosmopolitan.
In this case, though, it’s especially bad, as roughly 100% of canonical computer science material is all in American English. During my CS classes at the university this year, all the class materials were in German, except for the nouns, which were all English words! See (the end of) this post, for example.
Hella, a pleasure! We’ll definitely be seeing each other come April, I can tell you that much. Sorry I missed the opening conference, but I’d absolutely love to jump in wit you guys at the monthly meetings coming up.
Again, thanks for saying hello, and we’ll see each other soon!
