I remember one time in Taiwan, talking with an old man in a park who had been practicing tai chi (at least, I think it was tai chi). It was near dawn, so things were foggy still. He spoke in short bursts couched between long pauses, but damn, he was a deep thinker. Thinking he'd be an invaluable resource, I reached into my bag and pulled out a book; I wanted his perspective on where I'd gotten tripped up translating (or understanding). He said simply, "I cannot read." It's still amazing to me that I heard this first as "I don't read books," even though he distinctly said "<em>cannot</em> read". That moment certainly taught me a lot. Gave me a stillness for a while, like a concussion. Sadly, it's wearing off. I think I need a lifetime of that.
